Which are the images of our bodies, our earth, our cities, our dreams and our fears that artists reflect to us? The exhibition Brave New World proposes – from the perspective of Mudam Collection – an open and surprising view of the universe that surrounds us, through art works of about fifty contemporary artists. 18.06 – 19.09 Sketches of Space, Sketches of Life Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean Michael Beutler, Andrea Caretto & Raffaela Spagna, Simone Decker, Ann Veronica Janssens, Zilvinas Kempinas, Peter Kogler, Sarah Sze. Every generation has its own fashion, music, places. Rock’n’roll, the hippies, 968, Punk or Techno and Hip-Hop have also been given expression in Luxembourg. But beyond the variety of youth subcultures, there are things that bother all young people: sexuality, protest, search for identity. The exhibition “Forever young” explores what it means to “be young” by showing how the “youth phenomenon” has developed since the 1950s. Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain Right from the start, the name of “Casino” has been misleading, for one associates it with a place for gambling rather than with a place dedicated to contemporary art. Almost every day gamblers pop in at Casino Luxembourg in the hope to hit the jackpot. The title of the exhibition Ceci n’est pas un Casino! (This is not a gambling casino!) draws from the ambiguity of the art institution’s name: it asserts through negation what Casino Luxembourg is not, while at the same time the works presented in the exhibition all deal with the various aspects of game, thereby annihilating the statement of the exhibition title. On the occasion of this exhibition, contemporary artists will convert Casino Luxembourg into an over-dimensional playground. Curators: Jo Kox, Kevin Muhlen 26.09.10 – 09.01.11 Bruno Peinado Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain On the occasion of the exhibition Sous les ponts, le long de la rivière II (2005), Bruno Peinado’s slogan Born to be mild, arranged as a flower bed, drew the attention of the strollers in the Petrusse valley. In his work, the artist appropriates the language and signs of popular culture and art history as well as of music and film in order to restore them in the most various ways in his installations. By drawing from this very particular visual fields and by making use of known icons, Bruno Peinado catches our eye while at the same time he clouds the issue. The mixing and hybridization at work in the artist’s installations convey a new identity and a new meaning to largely known references. Curator: Kevin Muhlen Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain 41, rue Notre-Dame B.P. 345 L-2013 Luxembourg Phone: (00352) 22 50 45 www.casino-luxembourg.lu info@casino-luxembourg.lu Open: Wednesday – Monday 11 am – 7 pm Thursday 11 am – 8 pm All year round Cupid surprising Psyche at night Musée national d’histoire et d’art In 2008, the National Museum of History and Art acquired an oil painting by Dutch painter Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651), representing “Cupid surprising Psyche at night”. Abraham Bloemaert was a painter of history, portraits, religious subjects and mythological scenes, renowned also for his drawings and known as a Mannerist, Caravaggesque and academic artist. The period around 1590 saw historical painters such as Cornelis van Haarlem, Abraham Bloemaert and Joachim Wtewael produce a number of dramatic and extremely large-scale works, stunning their contemporaries. The story of Cupid and Psyche is not strictly speaking a myth, but was told by Apuleius in his “Metamorphoses”. For Psyche, Bloemaert drew inspiration from Michelangelo’s subjects, among others.
