The Dancing Procession in Echternach
On Whit Tuesday, 14th June 2011, the cnext edition of the Dancing Procession in honor of Saint-Willibrord will take place in Echternach. It’s a unique medieval religious tradition that candidates for UNESCO's list of immaterial World Heritage.
The participants, holding each other with white handkerchieves, dance in a really rhythmic way which leads to a very impressive global move. Each group of dancers is accompanied by musicians immutably playing the same melody, an obsessing air of polka. This original colourful procession passes through the old streets of Echternach before ending at the treshold of Saint-Willibrord’s grave in the Basilica’s crypt (from 9.30 to 13.00). The procession draws every year between 12.000 and 14.000 pilgrims to
Echternach.
